Osteoporosis care at home

Osteoporosis has no symptoms until something breaks, and a hip fracture is one of the events most likely to end independent living. The whole point of treating it is preventing that.

Two halves of the same problem

Fractures need weak bone and a fall. Most attention goes to the bone half, and the fall half is where the bigger difference is often available. We treat both: bone density, vitamin D, calcium and medication on one side, and the loose rug, the dark landing and the sedating tablet on the other.

Treatment worth continuing

Osteoporosis medications are frequently started and quietly abandoned, sometimes for good reasons and often not. We review whether the treatment is still right, whether it is being taken correctly, and whether the reason it stopped can be solved.

Questions about osteoporosis care at home

Can you arrange a bone density scan?

We order it and coordinate the appointment. That scan cannot be done at home, so it is one of the things we arrange at a nearby centre with guidance on transport.

Do I need vitamin D and calcium?

Often, but not always and not in unlimited amounts. We look at what you are already taking, including supplements, before adding anything.
