Dementia and Alzheimer's care at home in Bergen County
A waiting room is disorienting and an exam room is frightening. The same appointment in a familiar chair, with a familiar person nearby, is often completely unremarkable.
Managing dementia and Alzheimer's without the trips to an office
Bergen County is our eastern edge, from Hackensack and Teaneck through Paramus and Ridgewood up to Mahwah and Ramsey.
A clinician comes to your home anywhere in Bergen County with a portable exam kit and your chart already open. Visits run 45 to 60 minutes, which is the time it takes to examine you properly, review every medication in the house and write a plan your family can follow. Whether you are looking for a house call doctor, a visiting physician or in-home medical care for a senior parent in Bergen County, this is that service.
Why the setting changes everything
Agitation in clinic is frequently a reaction to the clinic rather than a symptom of the disease. Removing the car journey, the strange building and the wait removes most of the distress, and what is left is a clearer picture of how the person actually is.
Fewer medications, usually
People with dementia often accumulate prescriptions, including sedating ones that raise the risk of falls and worsen confusion. A careful review that removes what is no longer helping is frequently the most valuable thing we do.
We also look for the treatable things that masquerade as worsening dementia: infection, pain that cannot be described, constipation, dehydration, poor sleep and hearing loss.
After a hospital stay in Bergen
If you have recently been discharged from Hackensack University Medical Center or Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck, we can usually visit within two to three days to reconcile the discharge medication list against what is actually in the house. We are independent and not affiliated with any hospital system.
